User-Constructed Workflows Agent
Immediately after my arrival at Carnegie Mellon, I became client liaison for a lab team under Professor John Zimmerman and Director Anthony Tomasic, working on an interface for CALO, a powerful human coordination AI under development.

We were tasked with the responsibility of designing a User-Constructed Workflows (UCW) interface, for use on an agent that would interpret routine email requests and could be trained by the user to react to them in an automated fashion.

Effectively, this would place automation at the fingertips of the common person. We needed to make this process transparent.
We decided to create a way for the user to see the AI as a silent apprentice, visibly learning, but discrete and unobstrusive.

We designed a sidebar that silently reflects what the interface is learning about your current activities. Our final think-aloud usability study proved we had advanced the UCW interface design as far as the current backend implementation could support, making our project a success.
