| In this class, I was repeatedly elected by my classmates to manage a team varying in size from 4 to 8 people, who had only just met, without face to face meetings. All teamwork was coordinated entirely through distributed means, using online collaborative software. This was an incredibly interesting challenge. Collaboration through virtual means requires a refusal to take certain types of innate common understanding for granted, and the self-control to respect certain behavioral guidelines so that someone you cannot see will benefit in a way that they will not immediately understand. |
I became educated in the theory and practice of managing distributed teams in different cultures and timezones. I led my team to review business cases involving distributed teamwork, and familiarized myself with virtual management. My skills were verified when as project manager of the NASA PROPHET 2007 team, I organized our final presentation to clients in multiple timezones nationwide.
