| At the start of the 2006-2007 academic year, I volunteered to represent my Masters of HCI classmates to Carnegie Mellon's graduate student government. In addition to attending regular Graduate Student Assembly meetings and voting on policies for the effective distribution of thousands of dollars in student activity fees, it was my responsibility to manage the MHCI finances, organizing and funding our private events. These responsibilities accrued no academic credit of their own, but the work was essential to encouraging a positive graduate student environment for us all. |
During the meetings, we learned to exercise diplomacy; everyone present was representing their small department to the larger university community. Protecting the interests of each faction was important. Although our own department's studious members were often difficult to coax out of their project rooms, we ultimately succeeded in organizing several social events over the course of the year.
