| I learned to use Visual Basic .NET as a prototyping platform during one of my favorite classes, Prototyping Usable Interfaces, taught by Anind Dey. As my first major project for this class, I began with the freeware organizer called Chaos Manager. I appreciate the humble discretion of this friendly little tool, which takes up a minimum of screen space. Unfortunately, this form-based tool can only remind you of an appointment; it cannot register durations, check for scheduling collisions, and then prioritize between events when these collisions occur. I chose to add these capabilities. |
After some developing and testing of the form-based interface, I concluded that a form was simply not rich enough to communicate the necessary feedback. I then moved the entire interface to a visually dynamic drag & drop interaction, fully implemented in Visual Basic .NET. Intuitive movements of the mouse fulfill all necessary functionality. Think-aloud user tests verified the protoype's design.
